In Clarin, Misamis Occidental, a simple local delicacy has become a symbol of pride—and a reason for the community to come together year after year. The Suman Festival, celebrated from February 2 to 26, honors Suman sa Clarin, the town’s signature treat that has earned Clarin recognition as the province’s “suman capital.”
At its heart, the delicacy is comfortingly familiar: glutinous sticky rice cooked with milk, wrapped in fragrant banana leaves, and enjoyed with a sweet filling. But what makes Clarin’s suman truly memorable is how it has evolved with the community’s creativity over time. What began as a plain merienda is now offered in around 17 distinct flavors, giving visitors plenty to discover—from classic favorites like ube and mango, to local twists such as langka, durian, peanut, pineapple, buko, tablea, moron, cheese, carrot, and atik fillings, among others.
The festival is made even more vibrant this year as it coincides with the town’s month-long celebration of the 105th Araw ng Clarin. Alongside food-centered festivities, the celebration features community activities such as a job fair, mass wedding, street dancing, a dance showdown competition, and a volleyball league—bringing together families, visitors, and local groups in a lively show of culture and community spirit.
Whether you’re coming for the flavors, the festivities, or simply to experience local tradition up close, the Suman Festival is a sweet reminder of how food and culture can bring people together.
