As tensions continue in the Middle East, we are reminded of a painful truth. War is never distant for Filipinos. It reaches our homes through the lives of our OFWs.

Filipinos have lost their lives in the conflict. They were not soldiers. They were workers, parents, sons, and daughters who left home to give their families a better life. For many, leaving is never easy. They take on risks to provide for their loved ones, and even in times of crisis, many remain steadfast in their commitment to finish their contracts and support their families.

Many of our OFWs remain in these areas, waking up each day with uncertainty, choosing to stay not because it is safe, but because their families depend on them. Their courage is quiet but real. Their sacrifices go far beyond what we see.

We cannot keep asking them to endure this alone.

There must be stronger and more urgent efforts to protect our OFWs. They deserve to feel that their government stands firmly behind them, especially in times of danger and crisis. Their lives should never be placed at risk without clear and meaningful support.

OFWs continue to carry a huge part of our nation’s economy. More than that, they carry the hopes of their families. They should not have to carry the weight of war as well.

Their safety must be protected. Their sacrifices must never be met with silence. The Philippine government must implement more robust measures to safeguard our OFWs, especially those in high-risk areas.

At the same time, we call for an immediate and peaceful resolution to the conflict. No worker should have to choose between their safety and their livelihood.
